No more Paul the Octopus...

by Laura Ellis

So a sad sad day has come in Spain, and I for one think that a national moment, at least, of mourning should be held following the death of Paul the octopus in Germany.

One cannot fail to have heard about this world phenomenon who managed to guess correctly the outcomes of all the games that he was asked, as well as becoming a national Spanish hero for for seeing the outcome of the momentous world cup final between us and Holland. Following he became a sought after relic and many Spanish sea life centres offered high sums to have privilege of owning the countries mascot for the 2010 World Cup.

However the Oberhausen Sea Life centre kept a tight hold of him, and a world wide success ensued. Born in Weymouth in January 2008, this cephalopod passed away last night at the age of two, which for many other octopuses would be considered almost as a pensioner. His fame, no doubt, will live on, as will the memory of his unique talent!
