Salamanca football player "dies" for 20 seconds

by Kimberly

We were just hanging out cleaning up the house yesterday while my husband was listening to the Salamanca-Betis soccer game when it happened: Salamanca Football player Miguel García started to stumble after tightening his laces and then fell face-first into the grass.

The nearest player ran towards him at about the same time the medical aids got to him. The player ahd suffered cardiac arrest, and the quick attention by medics saved his life. They had to use the defibrillator two times before recuperating a pulse, allowing them to load him onto a stretcher and rush him to the Clinico Hospital in Salamanca.

Medics confirmed the the player indeed "died" for 20 seconds while his teammates watched from the sidelines breaking out in tears.

Miguel García is only 31 years old and is now said to be stable and recovered. He remains in the hospital after a small medical intervention to his heart.

As for the viewers, the images were shocking and leave you with goosebumps every time. The faceplant straight into the ground could not have been nice, but then again, it is definitely the least of García's worries. Once could not help but suffer with García's teammates.

Here in Salamanca, we are all wishing a full recovery for our soccer player. Our best wishes to him and his family!

Update: on Monday night after this article was originally posted, it was confirmed that the player will not be able to return to the game.
