The Way of St. James or St. James's way is known as El Camino de Santiago in Spanish.  It is one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world and was declared the first European Cultural route in 1987 by the Council of Europe and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The pilgrimage route through Northern Spain ends at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia where the remains of the apostle Saint James are said to be buried.

The Way of St. James has existed for more than a thousand years and became one of the most important routes for Christains in Medieval times.  Therea are many routes to Santiago de Compostela but the the main one is the route that was most used in the Middle Ages. the constant stream of pilgrims to Santiago have never ceased since St. James's remains were discovered, however, they have certainly slowed down especially during times of war.

Today tens of thousands travel each year to Santiago de Compostela. There are famous starting points throughout Europe and the popular routes are all clearly indicated with posts marked with the famous shell indicator. Some travel by foot, others by bike, some on horseback, or any other way they can make the journey.

Modern pilgrims can take advantage of modern guides, such as this one provided by Google. A spiritual experiene, a good way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a great way to discover Spain and the Spanish language...
