The Lost City of Atlantis found in Spain

by Kimberly

The Lost City of Atlantis has been found in Spain according to a new documentary.

On the heels of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, scientists announce that they have reason to believe that the mythical Lost City of Atlantis has been found buried in the mudflats of Donaña National Park in southern Spain north of Cadiz. The Lost City of Atlantis was destroyed thousands of years ago by a tsunami and has long been thought to have been located in the middle of the ocean.

In a surprising attestation to the amazing power of tsunamis, the scientists believe that the City of Atlantis was located 60 miles inland when it was destroyed. Richard Freund, team leader and archaeologist from Hartford University commented that "this is the power of tsunamis; it is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles (almost 100 kilometers) inland, and that's pretty much what we're talking about."

Interest first arose in this area in 2004 when Rainer Kuhne, a German physicist, saw some strange formations and geometric shadows that resembled the remains of a ringed city on satellite photos of the swamp area at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River in Spain. From 2009 to 2010, researchers and groups of archaeologists and geologists digitally mapped the area using deep-ground penetrating radar and underwater technology to detect human built objects in the mud.

They found evidence of canal systems and other artifacts of the lost city. Not only did they discover "proof" of the Lost City of Atlantis but they also found evidence of several other cities nearby that were likely built by Atlantis refugees to commemorate the city that they had lost.

A new documentary special called Finding Atlantis revealed the team’s findings on the Discovery Channel on Sunday. The documentary featured American, Canadian and Spanish scientists as they attempt to prove that Atlantis existed and that they have found it.

The legend of the Lost City of Atlantis goes back to the ancient Greek philosopher Plato who described the city in his writings 2,400 years ago as having been "swallowed up by the sea". Archaeologists have been searching for Atlantis ever since.  Plato wrote that the city had disappeared into the depths of the sea after being destroyed by floodwaters following an earthquake deep under the sea.

The philosopher described Atlantis as being located in front of the Pillars of Hercules, thought to be the ancient name of the Strait of Gibraltar, located between southern Spain and Morocco. The mudflats of Donaña National Park in northern Cadiz, where researchers believe to have found the Lost City, are located just north of the strait.

The findings have been criticized by other archaeologists including a Spanish team which will present their findings later this year.

This is not the first time the Lost City of Atlantis has been declared found. It has been supposedly found many times in various locations including:  the ocean floor, in Mediterranean islands, the Bermuda Triangle, Bolivia, Antarctica, Santorini and the Aegean Islands.

Some historians believe that the Lost City of Atlantis is simply a myth. However, these findings in the marshlands north of Cadiz in represent the best evidence to date of the existence of the Lost City of Atlantis.
