Where is the best Spanish Spoken?

by Kimberly

José Manuel Blecua has occupied the “H” seat of the famous Real Spanish Academy since 2006 and a year ago was elected as the president. The Royal Spanish Academy is an official institution responsible for the regulation of the Spanish language.

Yesterday, the 15th of December, Blecua presented the final volume of the New Spanish Grammar guide of phonetics and phonology. The new volume sells for 39,90€. The new edition was put together with the help of many university graduations from different capitals of each country and also the Association of Spanish Academies, formed by 22 different countries.  The idea is to ensure that the Spanish language adapts to the different linguistic varieties that exist, while protecting the essence of the language.

Regarding the myth that the best Spanish is spoken in Valladolid, Spain, the director noted that:

"There is no language better than the next. Nowhere is the Spanish the best in the world.  It is a myth that came from Madame D’Aulnoy, a French traveler in the 18th century, who wrote a beautiful book about Spain. When they asked her where the best Spanish was spoken, she said Valladolid, and that is how it stayed. I learned to speak there, so people won’t get upset with me if I say that the best Spanish is spoken in Cochabamba, Mexico DF, Buenos Aires, Tenerife…. and in Valladolid."
