Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera on Mexican 500 peso bank notes

by Kimberly

From this Tuesday on, the famous Mexican artists Diego Rivera (1886-1957) and Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) will appear on the front and back of the new 500 pesos notes (a value of about $40).

The announcement came from the Mexican Central bank which has issued a series of special edition currency in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence and 100 year anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.

Neither Rivera nor Kahlo participated directly in the social movement that began in 1910, they represent important exponents of the culture that produced a political change in Mexico.

The new currency, sure to be big with collectors, features the image of Diego Rivera on front and Frida Kahlo on back. The images are of self-portraits of the artists, done by themselves.
