Award Winning Writers!

by Laura Ellis

For many Hispanic writers the Cervantes Prize is something that they can only dream of, and this coverted award is this year celebrating its 25 year anniversary.

And who won it, well the third woman ever in fact, Ana Maria Matute! Her work is largely centred on the Spanish Civil War and its cultural effects, and for this reason she is often acclaimed as one of Spain's best post-Civil War writers. Furthermore, her writing has also created several unforgettable children's books, many of which have been translated into over 23 languages!

Not only does she receive the prestige of this highly sought after prize, but also 125.000€ of prize money! But the author herself recently stated that she takes it as recognition of the effort and dedication she has put into writing more than of the quality of what she has produced, truly a modest woman.
