Racing in Salamanca

It was the 'Tour de España'; an annual race with old cars which normally only takes place in Andalucia, in the south of Spain. But for the first time in the seven years history of this event, the competitors are also able to enjoy the roads, cities and landscapes in the heart of Spain.

The startdate was November 1st in Madrid. There are around a hundred cars competing, covering some 350 kilometers every day. This provides a friendly and sportive atmosphere. The drivers are probably more friendly to each other than Schumacher, Montoya and Alonso during their weekends in Formula one.

The first days participants drove through Castilla and Léon and stopped in Avila and Salamanca. A beautiful route, just think of the amazing buildings, from the University of Salamanca to the famous city walls in Avila.

On last Friday the competitors started their fourth racing day in the heart of Salamanca, leaving Castile and Leon behind and heading to Caceres. If everything goes well, the first car will reach the finish in Sevilla on Sunday.

In the afternoon, when I crossed the Plaza Mayor again, it was busy as usual, although there were no cars anymore and the noises of roaring motors were replaced by the buzzing of Salmantinos, students and tourists. And to Almudena my language teacher, I have to apologize for the fact I arrived in class five minutes late this morning. 'Perdóneme, me encantan los coches clásicos.'

Het ging hier om de 'Tour de España'; een jaarlijkse race met oude auto's die normaal gesproken in zijn geheel wordt gereden in Andalusië, in het zuiden van Spanje. Maar voor het eerst in het zevenjarige bestaan van dit evenement, kunnen de deelnemers ook genieten van de wegen, steden en landschappen in het hart van Spanje.

Op 1 november werd in Madrid het startschot gegeven. Er doen niet meer dan 100 auto's mee die etappes rijden van maximaal 350 kilometer. Hierdoor onstaat volgens de organisatoren een vriendelijke en sportieve sfeer. De coureurs zijn waarschijnlijk aardiger tegen elkaar dan Schumacher, Montaya en Alonso tijdens hun raceweekends in de Formule 1.

De eerste dagen van de race reden de deelnemers door de provincie Castilla Léon en stopten in Avila en Salamanca. Een prachtige route, denk alleen maar aan al die mooie gebouwen, van de universiteit van Salamanca tot de beroemde hoge stadsmuren in Avila.

Afgelopen vrijdag startten de coureurs hun vierde racedag, in het hart van Salamanca. Hiervandaan laten ze de provincie Castilla y Léon en rijden richting de volgende stop in Caceres. Als alles goed gaat, wordt de eerste auto op zondag afgevlagd in de finishplaats Sevilla.

In de middag toen ik over Plaza Mayor wandelde, was het er weer druk als altijd. Echter, er was er geen auto meer te vinden en het geluid van ronkende motoren was inmiddels vervangen door geroezemoes van Salamantino's, studenten en toeristen. Tegen mijn taaldocente Almudena zou ik graag mijn excuses willen aanbieden, aangezien ik vanmorgen vijf minuten te laat in de klas verscheen. 'Perdóneme, me encantan los coches clásicos.'
