CINE ESPAÑOL

by Ana Maria

Spanish cinemais among the most outstanding European cinema industries. During the 90's famous Spanish movies where filmed, such as "Belle époque" directed by Fernando Trueba, winner of the Oscar to the best foreign film in 1992.

During the last couple of years of Spanish cinema industry, the most famous Spanish film director has been Pedro Almodóvar, author of films such as "Todo sobre mi madre" (All about my mother), showing his view of the gay world, or "Hable con ella" (Talk to her) in which a male nurse falls in love with his female patient, both films have won Academy Awards. We cannot forget other films by Almodóvar such as "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios" (Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown) or "Tacones lejanos" (Far heels)

Spain counts with other popular film directors such as Fernando León de Aranoa, very concerned with social matters such as unemployment, which is actually the central argument in his movie "Los lunes al sol" (Mondays on the sun) or prostitution, in his latest film "Princesas" (Princesses)

Also the young director Alejandro Amenábar, winner of the Oscar prize to the best foreign film with "Mar Adentro" (the Sea Inside). Other famous movies by Amenábar are: "Tesis" (Thesis), "Abre los ojos" (Open your eyes), whose English version, Vanilla Sky, was played by Tom Cruise or "Los Otros" (the Others) with Nicole Kidman.

As for Spanish actors, one of the most popular is undoubtedly Antonio Banderas. He arrived in the US with the film "los Reyes del Mambo Tocan Canciones de Amor", and reached popularity with the film "Too Much". He is still one of the most popular actors of Hollywood, as we can see in his last movie "The legend of el Zorro".

Another outstanding Spanish actor is Javier Bardem, twice nominated to best actor by the Academy.

Among Spanish female actresses we may talk of Penélope Cruz, whose fame arrived with films such as Vanilla Sky, La Mandolina del Capitán Corelli or Gothika. Penelope was also popular due to her romance with Tom Cruise and she is still working on several new projects for movies.

Very good summary of the situation of the Spanish cinema. I will use it as an introduction for my AS students in order to give them a view of the Spanish cinema.

We have a "Spanish Cinema" section within the "Spanish Culture" part of our website (http://www.donquijote.org/culture/) which does get continously updated. Most articles are also in English and Spanish for faster language assimilation. We hope it is useful to you as well.

¡Saludos!

I have developed a unique Spanish-language interactive film glossary, CINEGLOS, that you may find useful when teaching Spanish cinema. The terms are defined in Spanish and linked to "live" clips from Spanish and Latin American films that clearly illustrate particular film techniques (camera angles, lighting, sound, editing). Feel free to use this resource in your classes:
