Finished your studies? Be a Spaniard for a year!

¡Hola! My name is Jeroen, I am from The Netherlands and 23 years old. In June this year I graduated and chose to combine the three mentioned options. I always wanted to travel abroad for a longer time than what is standard for a holiday. What also played a huge roll in my decision process, was the fact I wanted to gather experience and learn something that I can use in the future. There will be no backpacking and sheep shering in Australia for me (which perhaps might be very interesting). No, I decided to move to sunny Spain. For a year to be exact. Why Spain? Well, it is a great country to travel through. Just behold the interesting history, the rich culture and the agreeable weather conditions.

My Spanish adventure has already started, now I am in my second week of my Spanish course in Salamanca. My personal target is to get a job in Spain, preferably a job in communication, which my course of study was about. So it is really important that I achieve a proper level of the Spanish language, and that will be a real challenge for me. Just like Manuel, the Spanish waiter of the famous British television series 'Fawlty Towers', I also can say: 'I know nothing'. Before the start of my first lesson last week, I was a complete beginner. The vivid Salamancan student life and my busy daily schedule, sometimes makes it hard to find some free time, for diving into my study book.

Although, after one week I already know a lot more about Spanish grammar and pronunciation. Also I can speak and understand Spanish a little bit. Besides, thanks to a guided tour, which was organized by my school, I can find my way in Salamanca. We are making progress! On top of that, my school will teach me a lot about the Spanish culture. They give special extra culture lessons every day; from literature to flamenco and from surreal art to singing. Free of charge. So afterwards I will know a lot more about the culture as well. And by the way, these lessons are obviously only available in Spanish, a nice way to improve your Spanish simultaneously.

I will be staying in Salamanca for 6 weeks and afterwards I will study in Madrid for two weeks. And then? Well, I do not know yet. I will have a look later on. My school has got plenty of schools in Spain based in different locations. Maybe I will catch some sun in the sunny south? Who knows? After one busy, interesting and exciting week, I really have the feeling I did make the right decision to come to Spain. I am not a full Spaniard yet, but I already can advice you on what to do after you study: Go to Spain and live like a Spaniard!

¡Hola! Mijn naam is Jeroen, ik kom uit Nederland en ben 23. In juni van dit jaar studeerde ik af en koos ervoor de drie eerder genomende opties te combineren. Ik wilde altijd al reizen naar het buitenland, en wel voor een langere periode dan gebruikelijk is voor een reguliere vakantie. Wat ook een grote rol speelde bij mijn beslissing, was dat ik werkervaring op wil doen en iets wil leren waar ik ook in de toekomst wat aan heb. Dus geen backpacken en schapen scheren in Australië voor mij (wat misschien wel heel erg interessant kan zijn). Nee, ik heb besloten om af te reizen naar het zonnige Spanje. Voor een jaar om precies te zijn. Waarom Spanje? Nou, het is fantastisch land om rond te reizen. Kijk maar naar de interessante historie, de rijke cultuur en de aangename weersomstandigheden.

Mijn Spaanse avontuur is al begonnen, nu ik al in mijn tweede week van mijn Spaanse cursus in Salamanca zit. Mijn doel is om tijdens mijn verblijf hier, een baan te vinden. Bij voorkeur een baan in de communicatiebranche, aangezien mijn studie hier over ging. Het is dus zeer belangrijk dat ik de Spaanse taal goed beheers. En dat wordt nog een flinke uitdaging. Zoals de Spaanse ober 'Manuel' uit de beroemde Britse tv-serie het zo mooi kan zeggen: 'I know nothing'. Voor mijn eerste les vorige week, was ik een absolute beginner. Het levendige studentenleven van Salamanca en mijn drukke agenda, maakt het soms lastig om wat vrije tijd te vinden. Tijd die ik goed kan gebruiken om even mijn studieboek in te duiken.

Echter, na een week weet ik al veel meer over de Spaanse grammatica en uitspraak. Ook kan ik het al een beetje begrijpen én spreken. We gaan vooruit! Bovendien zal de school mij het één en ander van de Spaanse cultuur bijbrengen. Ze geven dagelijks speciale extra cultuurlessen over de meest uiteenlopende onderwerpen; van literatuur tot flamenco en van surrealistische kunst tot zanglessen. Helemaal gratis. Na afloop van mijn taalcursus weet ik dus ook meer over de Spaanse cultuur. En trouwens, de voertaal tijdens deze cultuurlessen is Spaans; een leuke manier om tegelijkertijd je Spaans te verbeteren.

Ik blijf zes weken in Salamanca. Daarna ga ik twee weken studeren in Madrid. En dan? Dat zie ik tegen die tijd wel. Mijn school beschikt over verschillende locaties. Misschien wat zon bijtanken in het zonnige zuiden van Spanje? Wie weet? Na een drukke, interessante en enerverende week, heb ik het gevoel dat ik de juiste beslissing heb genomen. Ik ben nog geen volledig geïntegreerde Spanjaard, maar ik kan je wel adviseren over wat je na je opleiding kan doen: ga naar Spanje en leef als een Spanjaard!
