Rain in Spain

by Lindsay Cook

Being British there is nothing that we seem to talk about more than the weather! My friends regularly ask me how my life in "Sunny Spain" is going. They are very surprised when I recount tales of my housemates lying on the sofa under duvets complaining of the cold, or my own misfortune of being soaked, having gone out without an umbrella!

The weather in Spain despite people ideas of glistening sunshine on golden beaches is actually very diverse. In Salamanca the average temperature for January is a mere 3 degrees. However it gets even colder in the snowy mountains, like the Pyrenees, where it is possible to ski in the winter months.

The Spanish themselves are aware of this changing climate. Having spent the last three months in Barcelona (where we enjoyed a temperature of 20 degrees one day in December) I was regularly warned of how cold I would be when I came to Salamanca. Temperatures here are indeed a little chillier than what I was used to, and the rain does seem to fall more frequently.

However due to my British blood I seem to be adapting to this climate change without too much difficulty! I must admit though that having heard tales of the Spanish students sunning themselves in the summer months in the "Playa" Mayor in Salamanca. I am looking forward to the arrival of the sunshine already!
